I want to buy an AntiVirus over the internet (download it but it cost money), let's say my computer ends up crashing or I get a new one will I have to buy it again or will I have some sort of code?

Please install Avira Antivir. I have tried many Anti Virus programs including paid ones. But I have found Anti Vir to be both reliable and compact. It has better capabalities than AVG or any other Anti Virus systems.
For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir庐 PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than most "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. Uses less then 10 MB RAM on my machine. New virus? won't let me load antivirus software. HELP!!?

I just got my friend onto the internet but she appears to have a virus on her computer (it may be something else but if it is a virus it's a good one!) I decided that I'd better get her some virus protection, searched AVG and Internet Explorer closed, searched antivirus software and it closed again, tried searching virus, anti* etc. but eveytime it closed, finally managed to get on the site by searching AGV download but guess what???

Sooo, I went on to my computer and downloaded the file to load AVG on to her computer, transferred it with a chip reader and tried to open the file, absolutely nothing happens whichever way I try (run, open from explorer, add/remove programs)

What I really need to know, is it a virus? if so how do I get rid of it, I have only tried loading AVG so maybe it is specific to that program are there any other good free antivirus software (or even a trial version but one that removes viruss and doesn't just search for them)

Any help would be appreciated.

You can only use one antivirus system at a time, otherwise they cancel each other out and you have nothing protecting you. Apparently the Panda is not working as well as you would like or you wouldn't be looking for something else.

What you can do is to backup the panda onto a CD or other media, then uninstall it. First be sure that you have any serial number or license key saved somewhere so it can be re-entered if necessary.

Install other software and let it run to see if it is finding things the Panda is not. Most software vendors will let you download a 30 day trial to see if you like it.

If you decide to keep it you purchase a license key. If not, uninstall it and re-install the Panda.

Well I still suggest AVG Antivirus. There is Free edition of AVG and there is paid license of AVG. I recommend a paid license of AVG Internet Security since it will both scan for viruses and malwares. But a Free AVG is good too along with AVG Anti-Spyware(it will automatically update and scan for it as well as live for only 30 days then you'll have to pay for the automatic update and scan, but it is still free if you do updates and scan manually).

The system / pc you attach has its own OS. Once the system has booted, u attach USB which is recognised as a removable media. You are not booting from pendrive. U need AV active from the host machine u r acessing the pen drive. The only way installing a AV on pendrive would makes sense, is if you install a complete OS onto it and then AV. Next time when you want to transfer the files to pendrive, boot the machine via pendrive (enable boot from USB / other devices in BIOS) and then goto the folder of client you want to copy and copy it to pendrive.

I've used Norton, Trend Micro's PC-Cillin, and Mcafee. First off I don't like Norton because of the simple fact that the dat files don't update on their own, you've got to do it manually. So if you forget, your dat files are out of date. Trend Micro has been considered to be one of the best by consumer reports but not exceedingly user friendly. I've loaded it up on friends computers that aren't as computer literate as I and they've always called me to ask how to do this or that with it. If you're looking for something easy to use with little to no action from you then I'd have to say Mcafee. Webroot is what allot of stores push on their customers but the protection is barely adequate from what I've seen. And to give you an idea of how much I'm into computers, all of my home systems (and those of my friends) are built from scratch by me. Hope that helps.

Have you checked to see if your computer needs defragmented? Or have disk cleanup? It may need it. I do it every so often and it seems to help my computer run faster. I have broadband and an antivirus also plus more. I do this once a week. Hope this helped. :) I have this on my comp.

I already pay subscription to McAfee for a top of the line antivirus.

When I'm sending attachments through my yahoo webmail norton scans every single attachment and of course norton is one of the slowest antiviruses there is (it slows down PCs upto by 25%). So it takes for ever to scan each file and when i'm sending several attachments (pictures or whatever to friends and family) it takes a long time while just scanning the attachments.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. In addition to a firewall you must have full time (active) virus protection and full time spyware protection.

If you compare that to the amount of viruses targeted at windows, it's nothing.

If you're paranoid, go to the add or remove programs thing. And search "virus scanner"

Also, don't log on as ROOT (administrator) when you don't have to. You're extremely unlikely to get a virus though

You will find that you can easily add firewall software and antivirus scanners by searching for them in Synaptic (System -%26gt; Administration -%26gt; Synaptic Package Manager) but for the most part you won麓t need them to start.

Firewalls in Linux are actually a small part of a much more powerful tool called iptables. With gui tools like Firestarter you don麓t have to know all the details to get set up but you might be surprised at what else it can do if you take the time to learn it.

Did you completely un-install your other anti-virus app before you attempted to install Webroot SpySweeper with Antivirus.

The use of 2 or more anti-virus programs at the same time can cause major conflicts. The 2 scanning engines will fight each other to scan every file that you read, write or execute which can cause a slowdown. For the same reason, using 2 A-Vs can cause you to have less protection from the various malware, not more.

(Using an anti-spyware with an anti-virus is good, however and is recommended)

BTW SpySweeper is a most excellent program. I use it and love it myself.

My own personal opinion as I have tested Nortons over many years is that Norton's is the worse resource hog, fails to find anything on scan, and when you try and remove from your pc you are left with 375 fragments hidden all over your systems that cause serious conflict.

I have read you should not run more than one antivirus program at the same time. Does that only apply to real time scanning / shield? After trying EVERY internet security suite after problems with Trend Micro鈥檚 early 2007 version. I am now back with Trend Micro Security Suite 2007 (past bugs fixed apparently). However, to be extra safe I would like to run scheduled daily scans by AVG, single scans only no resident shields or real time protection? Will this cause conflicts too?

I am currently running Ad Aware, Spyware Sweeper, and the Trend Micro Spyware Sweep with no apparent problems there.

Your antiviral protection will expire after a year or two and you'll have to renew it. OR if you want to "cheat", you can completely reboot your computer and that will essentially "reset" the antiviral program and give you another year for free!!
No, you are not protected for life. You can use the antivirus program itself forever, BUT normal subscription length for downloading virus updates is usually one year. So since there are new viruses coming out every day, not being able to update your virus definitions really makes your software worthless after the year is up, so you will need to renew. Also, my advice is to stay away from both Norton and McAfee. Norton - don't even get me started. Slows your computer down to a crawl. Especially the all in one software packages like Systemworks. McAfee - I have just found not to protect as well. My recommendations - Bitdefender or AVG.

Try Avast Home Edition, it's free. It works very well I have it. If people tell you AVG is good don't listen, it lags the system and is a nuisence.
Have to tried either Avast or AVG. Both work very well and both are free for personal use.

To stop an anti virus program from slowing your system down, do not allow it to do background scans, or boot up scans. Just run it manually every week or so, or when and if you think you may have acquired something that you feel may be nasty.

Why does my computer run slow when The Shield Antivirus 2006 is running?

I decided to let go of my Norton Internet Security package because it took so long for my computer to start up and because it was generally slow with this memory hog running. It's installed in two parts: the firewall and the antivirus. With just the firewall running my computer is lightning fast even on the internet. I don't want want to run my computer with only the firewall. Has anyone else experienced this? you might have a virus or spyware that is messing up with AVG's registry. even though everything has the green check mark, you're still getting messages about how some components aren't fully updated or installed, right?

my suggestion is to first do a virus scan and see if that picks up anything. if not, maybe you can contact AVG and ask them. if they do'nt get back to you, just uninstall AVG and and re-install a new version, or get a new antivirus and see if that one has the same problems... if it does, you probably do have a virus that is programed to attack antivirus programs, and maybe you should take it to a proffessional to get it checked out or wiped.

You poor poor people. Norton is the worst and I do mean THE worst.

The best is AVG Free made by Grisoft and it gets 100% of my vote, it's better than Norton, it found viruses that Norton didn't even look for (yes Norton was up to date). http://free.grisoft.com/

(Avast (Home edition(free)) is the only anti virus which on my PC has tracked every single virus. Hi none are really trustworthy. My son 16, deleted the Norton because it made it run too slow and put in the AVG and haven't had any problems and it is a free program. Now I also have Spy Sweeper by Webroot and that I pay for and the computer is running smoother and doesn't run like a turtle anymore.

Yes I do. Symantec works by interfacing with it's online server. Make sure ur internet connection is connected. Also, symantec has it's own firewall, u do not run two firewalls at the same time on ur pc so make sure ur windows firewall has been disabled, the firewalls on ur modem or router don't matter. It also needs cookies to function so ur default i.e cookie settings shudn't be any problems. If when trying to use symantec and i.e. ask u for permission to download any active x files clik yes.

I have no idea, BUT... I do know that I have seen a computer that pulled up at system error on Norton's ....... And the problem was Norton's. It literally found a problem that it, itself created and crashed the system. I'd re-think your choice of anit-virus software. Plus Norton's seems to be a strain on the "background" systems.

Isn't Norton wonderful in the way they readily charge for things that don't work and then want even more to even talk with you. Go to www.free.grisoft.com and download AVG free to the desktop. with the Icon disable Norton then use Add/Remove programs in Control panel to uninstall. Reboot and run the AVG install. You will then be protected with an automatic updating, free program that is better than Norton as far as resource use and protection. McAfee is not any better than Norton. If you paid, go to the credit card company and dispute the charge to see if you can get it removed.
