That is your problem. The antivirus program you have. It is also likely you got the program using a P2P. NEVER use a cracked version of any program. Even junk like 9,5.
If you don't have an internet connection you can download SAS and write it to a CD or flash drive and then install it on your infected computer.
Download and Install Super Antispyware free. Reboot into Safe mode and Run SAS. Allow it to quarantine whatever it finds.

If a computer has no internet connection, it has no need for an antivirus program, does it? No connection = no exposure = no risk.
Without the Internet connection you can't update it unless someone hands you a disk with whatever you've missed. If you've never updated 9.5, never downloaded or added suspect programs %26 never had an internet connection you should be alright (depending on where you got the PC). It should be clean. Just watch what you install now.

I downloaded the AOL Antivirus shield about a year ago and now I can't get it off my computer. I've tryed to remove the program but I get a pop up that denies me!!!! Anyone have any other suggestions?

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

make sure you dont remove any dll files during uninstalling norton... a dll file that was used by the dvd driver might have been deleted thus making it equivalent to being uninstalled as well

there is a anti virus for free it is called avast. I had the same thing happen with norton. so I read reviews on it and I downloaded it and registered and it updates by itself and is very efficient.
Don't know if this works with AOL... but I've had Norton's for 5 years now without subscribing.. just by turning back my computer's date setting. When my 90 days free trial subscription begins to expire.. I just turn my computer's date back and it thinks I'm still on my 90 day free trial. *wink*

From my personal experience, I copied the entire contents of the AVG folder to a CD-RW disc, reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled AVG, then copied the contents back to the newly installed AVG folder. This seems to have worked fine.

Everytime you get the updates, all of the updates sent out before it are included in the definition file. There is no need to back them up, as when you reinstall it or anything like that, the latest update gives protection to all of the know virus attacks, just like any other program. It may seem like you have to back them up but there is no need to with this arrangement.

Just save the whole file on a disk if you can. It's not really a big deal, I mean you can always download the software again and do a 2 minute update on the software.

You might want to consider Avast for anti-virus protection. Totally free and seems a step ahead of AVG. BitDefender free version is quite good at what it does, which is scan for and remove viruses. I have no idea how the active protection works though, as you must pay for it!

I have a business that uses 8 computers. 6 are networked and two are not.
Legally you can only install it for however many computers your end user license covers. Otherwise, you can install it on them all. However, it may not work for long. Norton for a while has been using an "activator" process when installing their products. This process accesses the Norton servers to verify the serial key. So it may install and then not let you update the virus signature database on the servers - which makes the AV function worthless.
Norton AV is not that good - you may be better off buying another AV product or upgrading to a site license with Norton/Symantec (expensive). I would recommend for you to check out either the Avira Antivir or the Comodo AV products. Both are free and have been rated among the best for actual virus detection.

Right now, I am pretty sure I have at least 1 virus on my laptop and I keep getting a crapload of popups that aren't getting blocked by google toorbar or that stuff. Your best bet is going to be to uninstall MCAfee (since it is a piece of crap anyway) and install AVG Free. Make sure to set it up to auto-update everyday. This is the program we use at work and I recommend to all my clients who are looking for an affordable (free) solution.

The pop-ups are probably SpyWare/AdWare which Anti-Virus does not detect. You should get SpyBot for those issues. Make sure to run the update after you install.

I would also recommend uninstalling all tool bars as they are generally considered adware as well. If you are not using FireFox I suggest you try that as a browser. It works well for stopping pop ups. You can download FireFox and find much more info on it here:

I know you people would say that I do not have to worry about viruses because I don't have an internet connection. Well, there are viruses that can get on other removable devices, like the usb device. I have to update my antivirus so that I can protect my computer from devices which carry viruses and so that I can also eliminate those viruses from my devices which are affected and therefore protecting both my devices and my computer.
You can have a friend with internet connection download the updates and burn them on a disc.

not that i know of, why don't you go on line to the website of your virus software producer and find out if they can mail you the updates on disk, or maybe you could download the updates to your friends computer as a file then copy them to disk and instal them onto your computer, but ask them first.

i had norton, it came with the computer. it slowed my reboots unmercifully. when i decided to go with mcafee, i had to go to a norton tool website to obtain a program that would get it out completely.
it seems that if you try to delete it, it scatters and hides. which i guess is what it was designed to do, if someone unauthorized was trying to jam you up.
i would call norton, they will tell you where to go for that removal program.

Try going in to control panel, then add and remove programs and delete from there.

I just installed Panda Antivirus and Firewall 2007 Beta. Every like 10 min. "explorer.exe" restarts/refresh itself. I've also had thsi problem. I think it has something to do with the scripts that Panda tries to block. I'm not sure how to fix this. Sorry. It's summer and there's a lot of internet security programs for free (after rebates) at Fry's Electronic or Circuit City. Hope this helps a little bit.

Personally, I prefer the Avast Antivirus. Out of the many products available, it puts one of the smallest drains on system resources (It slows you computer down the least). There is a free version available, and the only valuable feature it lacks is an option to schedule a recurring scan.
It does not have a popup blocker, however, I don't know of any antivirus programs that do. There are computer security packages that include both. I can reccomend that you either install something else to block popups. You can use a Yahoo or Google toolbar, both of those block popups. A better solution would be to use a browser that has a popup blocker built in, such as Firefox. Even the latest version of Internet Explorer has one built in. Just be sure it is turned on.
If you are still getting popups, especially if you get them when you aren't even browsing the web, you might have adware. Look at these products (All have free versions): Adaware, Spybot Search %26 Destroy and Microsoft Windows Defender.

McAfee works great for me, but most of my friends use AVG.
I don't use any of the free security solutions. Not that I don't think they won't work well in some situations, but due to how much malware is being created every day, and the fact the virus labs just can't keep up, I prefer to be as safe as possible and so buy a suite from Panda. I have never had an infection, and receive daily and sometimes several times a day, updates.
Everyone is going to have their preferences in security software. As such, this is my preference. I don't care for McAfee or Norton for the simple fact that they put so called "trial" software on machines which are prebuilt when the customer has not asked for any such software. These vendors know full well how difficult it is to remove this type of software, with special removal tools needed for most firewalls and anti-virus programs. Panda is the only one I know for sure that can be removed with the Windows Add/Remove applet.

Golden Eye is actually a Computer Monitoring Program (Keylogger). The reason it is classified as Spyware is because it includes mechanisms to thwart removal by security or anti-spyware products. It is classified as Spyware because of the inclusion of Invisible mode.
Use ewido to scan and remove this spyware. Because it is difficult to remove you will need to do the procedure to open your computer and completely remove this program.

Not a good idea. Anti-Virus programs have a tendency to interfere with each other. You can have 2 anti-spyware programs at once with no problem but never 2 firewalls or 2 anti-virus programs.
If you're running a Microsoft operating system, Microsft recommends that you only have one anti-virus installed.
You can safely have nod 32 and avg antivirus...they wont conflict in between (my experience), but it is not possible with other antiviruses.
But If you face any difficulties then you'll need to uninstall both of them and then reinstall the one you want.
I think there is no harm in trying this and if both of them run successfully, you'll be lucky having double protection.

Not recommended. I had two different anti-virus software installed and running before, not knowing that I had two, and my computer was not happy. The only way I could fix it was by reformatting the hard drive. Hopefully that was just a bad experience for me, but I wouldn't risk it.

yesterday! I downloaded a file and scanned it right away. It told me that the file was virus free but when i decompressed it, i end up with two files. One that was ok and the other one was a trojan named Kernels88. How come avg didn't detect it when i scanned it just before? Is there another free antivirus that is more effective than avg? avg is very effective. However, when you scan a compressed file it will only scan the files that are visible. You should have opened the compressed folder and scanned again so that all the files were visable.

I was able to remove all files associated with the xp antivirus 2008 worm, but the desktop background just shows up white. I can see all the programs and everything seems to be running properly, however the desktop still acts like a webpage button. If you click anywhere on the desktop it attempt to activate a webpage and gives an error message that the path no longer exists within the directory. I just want to know how to reset the desktop back to the factory settings to eliminate this "button".
My suggestion to you is that you first run this the free version of Superantispyware as you may have spyware plus fragments of the virus left in your system. It's not recommended, and it can definately cause instability on your system. It could also cause performance issues since there are two scans occurring when you open emails, documents, etc.
They would fight to quarantine the virus that was found.

ok, so I purchased norton antivirus 2006. I play a game on the web that has drop down menus and they dont work anymore. i had Norton Internet security before and there was an option to just disable it so that the drop down menus on the game would work. Id reccomend Norton i use it and ive had no problems from it.
from my so many years of experience I have found that norton antivirus is the most reliable software which also gets updated automatically on a regular basis and the only thing is that you have to purchase a licenced copy and install the same on your computer and it will take care of all your anti-virus and spyware problems. Though other sofwares like trend micros systems, and mcafee are also good antivirus solutions norton ranks as a leader.

i downloaded the yahoo tool bar, including the antivirus part, after i already had norton installed. when the window came up asking whether to allow yahoo's antivirus to access internet connection, i accidentally clicked no. so now yahoo's system can't automatically update to catch new viruses.... =(

Please install Avira Antivir. I have tried many Anti Virus programs including paid ones. But I have found Anti Vir to be both reliable and compact. It has better capabalities than AVG or any other Anti Virus systems.
For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir庐 PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than most "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. Uses less then 10 MB RAM on my machine. I just got my friend onto the internet but she appears to have a virus on her computer (it may be something else but if it is a virus it's a good one!) I decided that I'd better get her some virus protection, searched AVG and Internet Explorer closed, searched antivirus software and it closed again, tried searching virus, anti* etc. but eveytime it closed, finally managed to get on the site by searching AGV download but guess what???
Sooo, I went on to my computer and downloaded the file to load AVG on to her computer, transferred it with a chip reader and tried to open the file, absolutely nothing happens whichever way I try (run, open from explorer, add/remove programs)
What I really need to know, is it a virus? if so how do I get rid of it, I have only tried loading AVG so maybe it is specific to that program are there any other good free antivirus software (or even a trial version but one that removes viruss and doesn't just search for them)

You can only use one antivirus system at a time, otherwise they cancel each other out and you have nothing protecting you. Apparently the Panda is not working as well as you would like or you wouldn't be looking for something else.
What you can do is to backup the panda onto a CD or other media, then uninstall it. First be sure that you have any serial number or license key saved somewhere so it can be re-entered if necessary.
Install other software and let it run to see if it is finding things the Panda is not. Most software vendors will let you download a 30 day trial to see if you like it.
If you decide to keep it you purchase a license key. If not, uninstall it and re-install the Panda.
Well I still suggest AVG Antivirus. There is Free edition of AVG and there is paid license of AVG. I recommend a paid license of AVG Internet Security since it will both scan for viruses and malwares. But a Free AVG is good too along with AVG Anti-Spyware(it will automatically update and scan for it as well as live for only 30 days then you'll have to pay for the automatic update and scan, but it is still free if you do updates and scan manually).

The system / pc you attach has its own OS. Once the system has booted, u attach USB which is recognised as a removable media. You are not booting from pendrive. U need AV active from the host machine u r acessing the pen drive. The only way installing a AV on pendrive would makes sense, is if you install a complete OS onto it and then AV. Next time when you want to transfer the files to pendrive, boot the machine via pendrive (enable boot from USB / other devices in BIOS) and then goto the folder of client you want to copy and copy it to pendrive.

You are safer if you Install a AV on yur system %26 perform check before transfering the file to yur system. Installing AV for mobiles / PDA which has its own (OS) Operating System is a common practice. Both Norton %26 Mcaffee have for mobiles / PDAs.
You don't need antivirus in your pendriver. When you plug it in your computer, then you scan the pendriver. Also turn off autorun on you Windows, cause that's where the security hole is with usb-drives.

I need a new antivirus program and these are my two choices, McAfee and Trend Micro. Which is better. If this helps, this computer is used at home. It is a Dell XPS 420.
In my view McAfee is better as it gives better online protection and decent firewall against trojans and other spyware. one more feature is that McAfee will not make your system slow while running and scanning. the best thing is it is free and you can just resgister your own copy in your name and get free downloads, program updates a well as viruys removal tools free from their large database. I've used Norton, Trend Micro's PC-Cillin, and Mcafee. First off I don't like Norton because of the simple fact that the dat files don't update on their own, you've got to do it manually. So if you forget, your dat files are out of date. Trend Micro has been considered to be one of the best by consumer reports but not exceedingly user friendly. I've loaded it up on friends computers that aren't as computer literate as I and they've always called me to ask how to do this or that with it. If you're looking for something easy to use with little to no action from you then I'd have to say Mcafee. Webroot is what allot of stores push on their customers but the protection is barely adequate from what I've seen. And to give you an idea of how much I'm into computers, all of my home systems (and those of my friends) are built from scratch by me. Hope that helps.
After extensively researching all anti-virus products I can say the best anti-virus is Kaspersky, though NOD32 is better for computer experts. Kaspersky is the best all-round anti-virus program. NOD32 runs faster and has less software conflicts but as a consequence the user interface is difficult to use.
The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.

Have you checked to see if your computer needs defragmented? Or have disk cleanup? It may need it. I do it every so often and it seems to help my computer run faster. I have broadband and an antivirus also plus more. I do this once a week. Hope this helped. :) I have this on my comp.

I already pay subscription to McAfee for a top of the line antivirus.
When I'm sending attachments through my yahoo webmail norton scans every single attachment and of course norton is one of the slowest antiviruses there is (it slows down PCs upto by 25%). So it takes for ever to scan each file and when i'm sending several attachments (pictures or whatever to friends and family) it takes a long time while just scanning the attachments.
I downloaded the 鈥渦pgrade鈥?Dec 15 and had all kinds of problems with it. I finally contacted AT%26T Yahoo on Dec 18. They have suspended all further downloads of the Norton product to try and fix the bugs. I was told to go to Windows http://onecare.live.com and sign up for the 90 day free trial while AT%26T Yahoo try to resolve their problems.
I uninstalled the entire AT%26T Yahoo protection suite, but it left a few bits behind. Then I installed One Care and everything now works fine.
When and if AT %26T Yahoo announce they have 鈥渇ixed鈥?the upgrade, I think I will pass on it if it is still a Norton product. Even before this problem, I had tried Norton鈥檚 anti-virus and found it to be terrible鈥攁 resource hog that interferes with normal usage of your computer.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. AVG free antispyware is not active (full time protection).
In addition to a firewall you must have full time (active) virus protection and full time spyware protection.
If you follow all the following steps it should get rid of your problem and prevent future problems. All programs listed are free.

norton will slow down your pc and it's not that good anyways...norton is hard to remove... chances are you didn't delete it all when you uninstalled (common with norton products) download and run the norton removal tool, reboot to get completely rid of norton and install avg

As you can probably tell I am a Windows user but Ive seen how good Ubuntu is and I decided to give it a go on a spare PC of mine.
Ive got it all installed,which used up some of the old grey matter.
I am however most impressed, especially seeing as its free.

You're highly unlikely to get a virus in linux. Here is a list of Linux viruses:

If you compare that to the amount of viruses targeted at windows, it's nothing.
If you're paranoid, go to the add or remove programs thing. And search "virus scanner"
Also, don't log on as ROOT (administrator) when you don't have to. You're extremely unlikely to get a virus though
Ubuntu, out of the box, is fairly secure. The root account isn麓t even activated and there isn麓t anything listening to the internet.
You will find that you can easily add firewall software and antivirus scanners by searching for them in Synaptic (System -%26gt; Administration -%26gt; Synaptic Package Manager) but for the most part you won麓t need them to start.
Firewalls in Linux are actually a small part of a much more powerful tool called iptables. With gui tools like Firestarter you don麓t have to know all the details to get set up but you might be surprised at what else it can do if you take the time to learn it.

Its not a download, but if you go to trendmicro.com and run "housecall", it will identify and clean for free. Depending on your speed, it may take awhile so plan accordingly. Its not one of those that say yeah you have problems - buy me and I'll fix them.
Anti-Virus' are a personal preference type.
You know what you want it to do and when, so you
