well i they come up even when i dont have a browser open. they wont close!!! when i click on one to close it it just closes for half a second and another one pops up in its place...

the only way i get by is by minimizing them and just doing what i need to do.

i dont have alot of money right now so i cant go out and buy an antivirus program.. is there any way i can download one for free or do an online scan?

i have windows vista and for some reason alot of sites that will scan and fix things like that wont work, i dont know if its because of my operating system or a virus maybe..

Assuming that your browser has a pop up blocker and you have it turned on, those pop ups are indeed a sign of malware infection. Ad-Aware as suggested above is pretty lame in removing anything other than, well... adware. Your best first bet is to download, update and run Superantispyware.

i recommend avast free home edition. it is free. updates are seemless (it updates virus patches and the actual program without having to download anything...it downloads and installs while you are connected to the internet).

the updates are from day to day and sometimes multiple times daily. never had a virus with it..well never had a virus anyway...but all the people I know that have, love it, as I have introduced them to it.

Sure - if you don't mind the PC crawling. You should only run one anti-virus program at a time. As both programs will try to open and scan every file you access at the same time, it will cuase all kinds of problems. If you are concerned that one of the programs may miss something, then use one of the on-line virus scanning sites once a week as the second scan.

Yes because the new files that you instal are only used, but the old fiels are not used, the Nortan old files take alot of space off hard drive so yes, I do recommend that you unistal the old one adn then install the new one.

Any antivirus system is far superior then Nortons Symantec. Nortons is garbage and is only good at slick marketing skills. Does not know how to find a virus, and if one is found does not know how to clean.. Plus Nortons is a hugh resource hog. And if you go to remove Nortons from your pc you are left with 375 plus fragments glued to your registry, files, folders and hidden all over your system. Will cause you serious conflict.

Yes but it concentrates on viruses.

No protection is 100% by itself. Avast would be great, but I would still periodically scan with AdAware and SpyBOT. They are both free and will find things like tracking cookies that Avast won't. Avast has a real-time component that keeps the really nasty stuff off. Neither of the other two do, you have to scan by hand. But I would recommend the same with any AV including Norton.

what's wrong with norton? i use norton internet security and have had no problems! plus it's cheaper than mcafee and has everything u need on 1 disk! these free protection packages are nonsense. downloading these sites? do u really trust the source from which it came from? i mean u can get trojan horses and worms and hackers etc.................. these sites could contain hidden things like these and you probably wouldn't know! you can scan for virus's etc, but it'll come up as clean of course, unless they want money from u, then you'll have loads of infected files, spyware etc. i've tried these free sites and they do not offer full protection without spending money. it's your choice of course, but when my norton security is due for renewal i will buy a disk from pc world or a pc store rather than trust the content of the internet. suit yourself!

Avast, like Norton Antivirus is just a virus scanner. Other option for Virus scanner would be AVG. You will need to download anti-spyware products to protect yourself that way.

It DOES scan boot sector C, if you have it configured correctly. Go to the status tab, then click on configuration. On the far right you will see several check boxes under Additional settings. I have all of these boxes selected: Scan boot sectors of selected drives, scan master boot sectors, scan memory, ignore offline files, and search for rootkits before scan. This will give you the desired scanning you do in fact need. Hope this helps!

Both are amazing when it comes to antivirus but Kaspersky, although having a higher virus detection rate, uses more system resources (slows down your pc more). NOD32 has a slightly more complicated user interface but it is worth it. I use eset smart security which is basically NOD32 with firewall and I would highly recommend it. Out of your two given antiviruses, I would choose NOD32 simply because it has an awesome detection rate and hardly uses any system resources. Hope this helps.

Norton 360 is the best one out there. Personally I don't think McAffee is very good. CA isn't very good either. I'll rank the ones which I know.

1.Norton 360 (Most Recommended) It's fast and light on resources unlike previous versions. It's the best overall. Best antivirus, antispyware.

2.Zonealarm Internet Security Suite(Highly Recommend. Used it for 1 year). Recently there has been a slow down which affects some computers. But still have a go at it. Zonealarm has the best firewall. It uses the Kaspersky antivirus engine.

3.Kaspersky Internet Security Suite. Great antivirus and equals Norton's antivirus.

AVG is a very good anti-virus. It does miss some viruses, but then the same is true for EVERY anti-virus, be it free or cost $5000. AVG has the added advantage of being very light on your system resources, so you virtually don't feel it's presence. AVG has a free version, which is free for life. I guess you were using AVG 7.1 which expired in January this year. The latest version of AVG is 7.5, you can get the free version from

If you are happy with your Norton Anti virus, then you can go to Staples and buy the 2007 version. You will pay more than $40 for it, but you will get a rebate in which you will end up paying $29.95+tx vs. $40+tx annual renewal through Norton. I am happy with Norton, and that's what I do. Although there are more expensive, and more cheaper ones, I've found Norton to be the best for me, in my opinion, and I've tried several inferior anti virus products. Good luck to you, and I hope you are happy with any virus protection you buy, or get for free. Be wary of the free stuff, even though it sounds good. I'm not trying to discourage you from trying them, just be careful.

I personally use Avast! and have had no problems what so ever with it. It updates the virus database approximately every day and notifies you of any changes.

It's a good product but it is resource heavy so it takes a lot of RAM. As for 20 minutes to scan everything, that isn't too bad. You can configure your scans to skip certain folders and sectors to try and help speed it up though if you prefer.

Personally I don't use Norton or any product that they have.

Norton is a system hog, and in order to get it off your system 100% you have to DOWNLOAD their removal tool. Now, why type of company is that? That makes you go download another piece of software to remove their product. Which by the way, does not say anything on the package about revomal instruction.

As for your hard drive, wait till you get some programs on it and see how long it takes.

NOD32 is a very good program, does not slow down computer at all, Marat Fidarov says the same thing, so I would strongly recommend NOD32.
I depends on how much programs you have running at one time. i have 512 mb ram and usually have 200 mb ram with running programs. nope avira won't slow down your computers performance but itll be wise to upgrade to more ram.
I have it installed on my computer. Most of the time, I don't even know it's there. Once a day it runs a virus check. If I'm doing something at the same time, everything will go slower while the check is running.

I don't know about the 240 ram. Did you read the system requirements on the website before you downloaded? It will tell you the minimum levels you have to have to run the software.

By the way, I've been very happy with Antivira. It caught and cleaned up some nasty trojan horses my previous antivirus missed.
It is fairly light on system resources. A lot lighter than Norton or McAfee. If you do not use an antivirus and get infected you will learn what slow is.

In my experience the best free anti-virus software (and also best anti-virus software in my opinion) is AVG free. You can get this from either lavasofts website or by doing a google search for AVG. I've used this for over a year and been very pleased with it.

Click start, then control panel. Then find 'Add or remove programs' (usually the first one) and double click it. Now find the programs and click uninstall

Avast is what I use. It's got a slicker interface than AVG, and works well for me.

The problem with Norton (aside from price) is that it can take a speedy PC and reduce it to a crawl. Both Avast and AVG are just as good as Norton and don't impact performance as much.

Comodo has an entire suite of free products, if you want to check those out as well.

Still Norton requires much much resorces from your machine than Trend Micro and as far as I know, Trend Micro up-dates the virus libraryes much often.

Trend Micro's Housecall and other programs has rated higher then Norton and many others.
If you keep your nose clean, having the most cumbersome, negatively corporate-type AV software is not as necessary. Loading NAV is like taking away 1/3 of your CPU and Memory, and sometimes worse.
I have been using Trend Micro for a long time now and i have had absolutely no problems with it. The updates are frequently available. So i would recommend you to use it.

How did you try to uninstall AVG? Did you go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it there? If you deleted some files prior to trying to uninstall, you will have to reinstall it and uninstall again.

Well the first thing I can't understand is why have you uninstalled BitDefender. Bitdefender is one of the best internet scurity softwares today. It ranks with the 3 best. It is by far better than Norton. Had you uninstalled it for Kaspersky, it would have it acceptable. I simply can't understand why....

But here is a solution: Use RegCleaner. Regcleaner in facts deletes old registry or startup entries. I think it might help you. Else try to do a dive clean up by launching the already windows-integrated Disk Cleanup found in System Tools (in the start menu).

If those above-mentioned things do not resolve your problem, it might be that your Windows has corrupt/damaged files. Do a scandisk. Then try to repair the registry or simply reinstall Windows itself.

Neither. I don't like paying subscription fees for services that should be free. I prefer AVG Free Edition, the program is free and updates are free for life, you don't even have to register the program, if you don't want to. AVG Free is made by Grisoft. I have been using AVG Free for about 3 years now and I think it is much better than Norton, it found viruses that Norton didn't even detect.
My personal preference is Norton. I like it over MacAfee and everything else.

A 'real' hacker would not be bothered and couldn't care less about seeing your cam pics.

A 'real' hacker is after the data on your computer, stuff that is worth money such as your credit card number, social security number etc. Your bandwidth and computing power is valuable too.

Most people today have a dynamic IP address that will change (lease expires) every 24 hours automatically.

If it would make you feel better, if you have an ISP supplied modem / router, one can often force an IP address change by turning the modem off for a full 5 minutes and then turning it back on again.

To access Safe Mode, reboot then repeatedly press the F8 key at the first screen. The screen will look strange, but don't panic. This is normal in Safe Mode.
