There are anti-virus suites that can be set-up to automatically update the definition files on servers and workstation (i.e. Sophos enterprise and McAfee Policy Orchestrator) These Programs are set-up once and the update and protection is automatic. You must invest some money in setting this up though.

Mind you, managing a network cannot be fully automated, you constantly need to check it once in a while. Just to make sure everything is working A-OK.

Just about every day is a new virus. And your scanner is just that.. a scanner. What does it scan if you don't tell it what to scan?

it needs to be updated regularly if not, then you're in trouble. try to remember to get an update about at least once a week or more.. remind yourself to do it manually say every Sunday or so.
if you dont get the updates your antivirus wont find the new viruses that have come out since the last date you got them
