Help me IT people- my computer is so slow I can't even run antivirus on it?

what should i do? when i turn it on, it comes up with the desktop and its so slow opening things up it takes ages. This happened all of a sudden one day. what could be the reason behind it? shoud i download antivirus? but how because it is so slow...or should i delete files could it be the harddrive is too crammed?
