If my antivirus program is on auto protect does it automatically scan everything in my computer?

No, realtime protection scans files that are opened or accessed. Not all the files on the computer. A manual or scheduled scan will.

Nope. It does not usually scan archives (like .zip, .rar) so you'll have to manually scan it. Don't worry, it's not THAT of a pain.

yes..it finds most of the virus if u keep it on auto protect scan..

but u should always update ur antivirus with the latest update definitions..so that if u don't do manual virus scan then also it finds the virus when its on auto protect mode..
What auto protect does varies with each type of AV.

Generally it automatically checks e-mail,files u open, sometimes even periodic full system scans.

U can look this up on the help of your AV
Real time scan is real time so what ever file is opened will be scanned immediately for threats, that is why all antivirus do full system scan at least once so that all threats are detected and repaired or deleted and thereafter only real time has easy work to do ,scan the file which is being opened so it takes less memory power for this operation.
yes it atuomaticly scan every thing if u get mail it scan and if it is some virus threat it tells that u mail contain blocked message
