AVG is free and I use it and i'm virus free for the past 6 months
I recommend eTrust its the one I use or try spy-bot search and destroy ive used that and it was good as well.
i like using windows defender if you have xp

but otherwise i just use yahoos toolbar

AVG Free Edition works well, is very easy to use, and is updated frequently. I have used it without trouble - and without viruses - for about three years, now. Definitely worth your consideration.
