Can you recommend an antivirus software that won't eat up the space on my hard drive?

I have a 30 GB hard drive and Norton Antivirus is eating up almost half the space, mainly with the Live Updates. This is over the course of 2 years.

Is there a good AV software that is considerate of the fact that hard drive space is not infinite?

Is there any proven way around this problem?
